1. General Description
The DX51D smooth galvanised board is a cold-rolled steel product, coated with a zinc layer by the hot-dip galvanising process. The 275 g/m² zinc coating provides excellent corrosion protection, making this material suitable for environments exposed to moisture or aggressive weather conditions. Standard EN 10327/04 defines the technical specifications for continuously galvanised steel sheets used in general applications.
- Designation DX51D: According to the EN standard, "DX" indicates cold-forming steels and "51D" specifies a steel grade intended for forming (bending, profiling) with adequate mechanical properties. It is a low yield strength steel, ideal for machining.
- Zinc coating (275 g/m²): The amount of zinc applied on both sides of the sheet is 275 grams per square metre, which ensures superior corrosion protection and long service life.
- Smooth surface: The board has a smooth surface with no patterns or textures, making it suitable for aesthetic applications or for further processing such as painting.
2. Material composition and properties
- Base material: Cold rolled, low carbon steel, which offers good malleability and mechanical strength.
- Zinc coating: Hot-dipped zinc coating forms a protective barrier that prevents oxidation of the steel. The 275 g/m² coating is one of the most widely used, offering a balance between protection and cost.
- Mechanical properties (according to EN 10327/04):
- Yield strength: 140-350 MPa (depending on thickness).
- Tensile strength: 270-500 MPa.
- Elongation at break: Minimum 22% (indicating good ductility for deformation).
- Thicknesses available: DX51D sheet is typically available in thicknesses between 0.4 mm and 3.0 mm, depending on application requirements.
- Widths and lengths: Sheets can be supplied in coils or cut to specific dimensions with standard widths up to 1500 mm.
- Surface finish:
- Smooth surface with uniform appearance.
- May have additional temporary protection (oiling or passivation) to prevent white corrosion during transport or storage.
- Available with minimised or normal zinc bloom, depending on requirements.
3. Advantages of DX51D 275 g/m² galvanised sheet
- Excellent corrosion resistance: The zinc coating protects the steel against rusting, even in damp or weathered environments.
- Durability: Thanks to the zinc coating, the sheet has an extended service life, making it ideal for long-term applications.
- Versatility: Can be used in a wide range of applications due to its mechanical and aesthetic properties.
- Ease of processing: DX51D board is malleable, allowing bending, cutting, profiling or welding without compromising the integrity of the zinc coating.
- Aesthetic Appearance: The smooth, uniform surface is suitable for visible applications or for subsequent painting.
- Cost-effective: Compared to other corrosion-resistant materials (such as stainless steel), galvanised sheet is more affordable, offering a good price/performance ratio.
4. Main applications
DX51D smooth galvanised sheet DX51D with 275 g/m² coating is used in many industrial and commercial sectors including:
- Construction:
- Roofs and facades for residential, commercial or industrial buildings.
- Gutter and gutter systems.
- Structural elements for metal halls or warehouses.
- Sandwich panels for walls and roofs.
- Automotive industry:
- Components for car bodies, such as panels or reinforcing elements.
- Domestic appliances:
- Housings for household appliances (washing machines, refrigerators, etc.).
- Furniture industry:
- Metal furniture, shelving or cupboards.
- Agriculture:
- Silos, greenhouses or other structures exposed to variable environmental conditions.
- Manufacture of metal packaging:
- Containers, boxes or other heavy-duty packaging.
- Ventilation and air-conditioning systems:
- HVAC ducting and components.
5. Standard EN 10327/04
The European Standard EN 10327/04 (later replaced by EN 10346 for newer versions) specifies the requirements for continuously hot-dip galvanised low carbon steel sheets and strips. It includes:
- Classification of steel types (DX51D, DX52D, etc.).
- Specifications for zinc coating (e.g. Z275 = 275 g/m²).
- Dimensional and surface quality tolerances.
- Performance tests such as corrosion resistance or zinc coating adhesion.
6. Recommendations for use and maintenance
- Storage: The board should be stored in dry, well-ventilated rooms to prevent white corrosion (oxidation of zinc in humid conditions).
- Processing:
- For cutting or drilling, use suitable tools to avoid damage to the zinc coating.
- When welding, extra care is required as zinc can generate toxic vapours; welding in ventilated areas is recommended.
- Painting: If painting is desired, the surface should be cleaned and degreased to ensure paint adhesion.
- Maintenance: Galvanised sheet generally requires minimal maintenance, but periodic inspection for scratches or damage to the zinc coating can prolong its life.
7. Limitations
- Exposure to highly corrosive environments: In environments with high salinity (e.g. coastal areas) or exposure to harsh chemicals, the life of the sheet may be reduced. In such cases, additional coatings (e.g. painting) or other materials such as stainless steel may be used.
- Scratches: Damage to the zinc coating can expose the base steel, which can lead to localised corrosion.
- Welding: Requires extra precautions due to zinc vapours.
